HomePageEngineering -- Our FutureThe George R. Brown School of Engineering, Rice University, is engaged in developing a strategic vision for its future and a plan for achieving that vision. The elements of this vision are summarized on the School web site. The Dean has charged the Rice Engineering Education Forum (REEF) with developing ideas and a plan to achieve the School of Engineering’s strategic goals in the area of engineering education. Those goals can be distilled as preparing Rice engineering students to become the engineering leaders of the next decades: that is, engineers who possess a highly integrative view of engineering problems; engineers who are able to conceive and direct projects of great complexity; and engineers who can function confidently in a world of rapidly changing technical, social, political, and economic factors. A second part of the charge is to position the School of Engineering as a nationally recognized center of excellence in engineering education and scholarship. Our initial proposal is to create an Institute for Engineering Education and Leadership that addresses three areas that cross departmental boundries:
